In a live television broadcast for the first time, the British watched on Thursday morning the sentencing from a London court in a criminal case.
Judge Sarah Munro sentenced 23-year-old Ben Oliver to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 10 years and eight months, for the manslaughter of his 74-year-old grandfather.
Oliver has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and mitigating factors such as his health condition, abuse by his family and his confession have been recognized.
The license for TV cameras in British courts follows a change to the law in 2020, the implementation of which was postponed due to the pandemic,
The purpose is to give the public a better understanding of the logic of sentencing in cases of public interest. As today, the camera will be fixed on the judge as he explains the reasoning behind the sentence, to protect prosecutors, witnesses and jurors.
