A woman who was too close to her newborn baby was attacked by the seal.

A 60-year-old elementary school teacher was about 20 feet from Kaimana Beach in Waikiki, Hawaii, when the attack happened early Sunday.

Footage from the scene shows a seal named Rocky barking, searching for a pup, and then assaulting a woman.

I tried to escape by spraying water on the rock, but was sucked into the water.

Witness Rosa Timberlake told KITV: It was hard to watch. At some point, Rocky’s mouth was grabbed and he tried to escape.

Eventually, the canoe player got between the woman and the rock and held on until she was safely back on shore.

Another passerby, Kurt Otsuka, told Hawaii News Now:

He was taken to hospital and had scars on his face and behind his arms.

Hawaiian Marine Animal Response said:

“When a mother seal with a child is in the area, we continue to warn people not to play in the water and to stay at least 40 meters away from the mother seal with a child.”

However, the woman’s husband told the Department of Natural Resources that the couple saw the cub after it was born and “read and followed all signs that seemed safe.”

He said: Nobody here is guilty. My wife just swam and she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“No one was able to sleep last night,” the woman said after the attack.

“Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother’s mouth sealed shut,” he said.
