A border guard helicopter crashed today in a canyon in northern Georgia, killing eight people on board, the country’s interior minister announced.

The helicopter was trying to approach a steep area in which hang gliders were stranded.
Under unclear circumstances, the helicopter – carrying four crew members and four rescuers – went down and crashed in the gorge near the Gundauri ski resort.
Videos broadcast by Georgian media have captured the moment of the crash and the explosion that followed.
“Unfortunately, eight people died,” Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri said. Moments later, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili declared a day of national mourning for tomorrow (July 30) over the deadly tragedy.
