Iran: The death toll from the floods reached 53

According to the authorities, the fate of 16 people is unknown, about 3,000 have been left homeless and another 1,300 have been moved to safe locations.

At least 53 people have died due to floods in several parts of Iran, the head of rescue and relief services said.

Mehdi Valipour, head of the Iranian Red Crescent Relief and Rescue Agency, told Fars news agency that the fate of another 16 people was unknown. About 3,000 people have been left homeless and another 1,300 have been moved to safe locations, according to Valipour.

In total, 687 rescue teams consisting of 3,000 members operate in various parts of Iranian territory.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi earlier today ordered cabinet members and local governors to mobilize all available means to deal with the floods.

In Mazandaran province, the head of the Crisis Management Agency, Hossein-Ali Mohammadi, said that due to the floods, a bridge and part of a building collapsed, while the road network suffered significant damage. At the same time, there are temporary interruptions in both electricity and telecommunications.

The heavy rains, which are expected to continue until Monday, have so far caused widespread flooding in 20 provinces of Iran.
