Among the dead are at least six children, including a one-year-old infant.

Residents of Kentucky are having a dramatic time, seeing the death toll from major floods rise.

As the BBC reports, catastrophic flooding has killed at least 25 people in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky.

It is the worst such disaster in decades.

The governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, estimated that the number of dead will rise even more. Hundreds of homes and businesses have been flooded.

The American president Joe Bidendeclared the flooding a “major disaster” and ordered federal aid to the area.

Among the dead there are at least six childrenamong them a one-year-old infant.

Scientists say climate change is triggering more extreme weather events, such as flooding in Kentucky.

While on tour with the National Guard, the governor said the flooding was “by far the worst” he had seen.

“There are still a lot of people out there, a lot of people who are missing,” he added, warning that it could take weeks to find all the victims.

Hundreds more have been rescued by boats or helicopters.

In the affected areas at least 33,000 people are without electricity. The flood – after torrential rain – caused mudslides and made roads impassable.
