The harvest in Crimea exceeded two million tons and is the largest since the time of the Soviet Union
THE Crimeawhich was annexed by Russia in 2014, it had a harvest of more than 2 million tons of grainbefore they undergo drying and cleaning – her biggest harvest since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the local agriculture ministry announced today.
It is Crimea’s biggest harvest since Soviet times, when the harvest reached 2.2 million tons of grain in 1989, the ministry said, adding that farmers have already collected grain from 95 percent of the harvest area.
Ukraine has accused Russia of stealing grain from territories Moscow has seized since it sent its army into the country on February 24 and exporting some of it from Crimea. THE Moscow denies any such action.
Ukraine, a major grain exporter, is unable to ship its goods abroad through Black Sea due to the Russian blockade on its ports since February 24. The two countries signed agreements in Istanbul in July aimed at resuming shipments to avoid a global food crisis. The first ship carrying grain left today from the Ukrainian port of Odessa.
