Road accidents are frequent and often fatal in Ivory Coast, where the road network is in poor condition and many vehicles are poorly maintained. AFP points out that there are not a few drivers who hold licenses bought by corrupt inspectors, without ever having attended a school for the necessary driving lessons.
In Ivory Coast, there are approximately 12,000 traffic accidents each year, which are the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5-29, according to data from the African country’s Ministry of Transport.
