The Pentagon said on Monday it would provide Ukraine with a new security assistance package valued at up to $550 million, including additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery missile systems (Himars).
“To meet evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with crucial capabilities,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
After a relative tactical pause, the Ukrainian War entered its third major phase last week. Kiev has expanded the movements of its first counteroffensive, while Moscow has resumed the advance in the east and greatly intensified its missile attacks.
Ukraine works to isolate Russian forces in Kherson, the first major city conquered by Moscow, early in the war. A port in the south of the country, it is the capital of the homonymous province, whose Russian control established a bridge between Donbass and Crimea, annexed by Vladimir Putin in 2014.
The next step would be to retake the city, which remains inhabited. For that, you need to bomb it intensively.
The Russians, in turn, resumed pressure on the remaining portion under Kiev’s control in Donbass, in Donetsk province. Since 2014, the area has fallen into civil war and was divided between Ukrainians and Moscow-backed separatists.
