Biden administration officials did not release the identity of the leader reported by the Associated Press on Monday afternoon.

Al-Zawahiri oversaw the 9/11 attack with al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. After the 2001 terrorist attack, the two leaders fled the US military in Afghanistan. US troops raided Pakistan in 2011 and killed bin Laden, but Alzawahiri’s whereabouts have long been unknown.

It is unclear exactly where Alzawa Hiri was killed or which wing of the US military he attacked.

The CIA carried out a drone strike in Kabul, an official with knowledge of the matter told The Washington Post.
