“The US should abandon any attempt to play the Taiwan card, it should faithfully adhere to the one China principle. If the U.S. persists in its behavior, all serious consequences will be the responsibility of the U.S.”

China warned on Tuesday of retaliation if the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi actually travel in the afternoon to Taiwan.

“In the face of the reckless actions of the US side that ignored China’s repeated warnings, any countermeasures China takes are legitimate and necessary,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press conference in Beijing.

“The US should abandon any attempt to play the Taiwan card, it should faithfully adhere to the one China principle. If the US persists in its behavior, all serious consequences will be responsibility of the USHua said.

Although the House speaker’s schedule makes no mention of a flight to Taiwan, Pelosi is expected to visit the self-governing island Tuesday afternoon despite warnings from Beijing. Pelosi began her tour in Singapore on Monday before traveling to Malaysia a day later. From there, it is scheduled to fly to South Korea and Japan. Several American and Taiwanese media reported Pelosi’s possible trip to Taiwan, citing unnamed sources.

When asked about the nature of Beijing’s “retaliation” should Pelosi’s visit to Taipei take place, the Chinese official replied: “What I can tell you is that the US will be held responsible and pay the price for the blow to dominance and China’s security interests.”

While Taiwanese officials have not commented on a possible visit by the US official, China, which claims the island as part of its territory, said its military “will not stand idly by” if its “sovereignty and territorial integrity” are threatened.

In this context, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his American counterpart Joe Biden “not to play with fire” on Taiwan, while China is intensifying its military exercises near Taiwan, Beijing has also canceled several flights at several airports in Fujian, the Chinese province closest to Taiwan.

Besides, on Tuesday it became known that the Chinese authorities are proceeding with an import ban on a range of Taiwanese products.
