US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sparked a crisis with China on Tuesday when she visited Taiwan, which Beijing considers a rebel province. This is the first time in 25 years that an American official the size of Pelosi has visited the island.
For the Chinese, Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan represents an affront to the country’s sovereignty. Even before the parliamentarian’s landing, China had already started military exercises in the region to demonstrate annoyance. After her arrival, Beijing sent warplanes to the outskirts of the island – and the US also increased its military presence there.
Pelosi’s decision caused discomfort even in Washington, because even the United States does not recognize Taiwan as an independent territory.
In this Wednesday’s episode (3), Café da Manhã explains this diplomatic crisis and assesses the risk of a conflict between China and the United States in the region. The podcast listens to Fernanda Magnotta, coordinator of the International Relations course at Faap – she explains why the Taiwan issue is so delicate and analyzes what the costs of a war would be.
