The penalty will be up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

The tallest tree in the world according to the global Guinness record with a height of 115.92 meterslocated in Redwood National Park in California. This is “Hyperion”, a large coniferous tree (sequoia) of the Cypress family. His name comes from mythology as Hyperion was one of the Titans and father of the sun god and the moon goddess.

According to a CNN report the park issued a statement where forbids access to the tree with a penalty to those who do not respect it up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

“The giant sequoia is deep in the park without a trail through dense vegetation and requires a long hike to get to it,” reads the announcement on the national park’s website.

“Despite the rough ride, the increased popularity due to bloggers, travel writers and websites has resulted in the destruction of the ecosystem around Hyperion. As a visitor, you must decide whether you will be part of the protection of this unique landscape – or be part of its destruction.

Leonel Arguello, the park’s chief of natural resources, told the San Francisco Gate news website that cell phone and GPS services are down, making it difficult if someone gets lost or injured in the park’s dense vegetation.

Visitors, however, are not the only danger to this giant tree. Fires that break out more frequently in California’s national parks pose another major threat to these centuries-old trees.

In 2021, managers of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks took drastic measures to protect some of the world’s largest trees from fire.

The ‘General Sherman’, considered the world’s largest tree by volume, was wrapped in a durable aluminum-based material that is fire resistant.
