Russian prosecutors on Thursday asked for a prison sentence of nine years and six months for drug trafficking for the American basketball player Britney Greinera TASS journalist reported.
The prosecutor asked the court to find Greiner guilty of trafficking “a large amount of drugs” and sentence her to nine years and six months in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles ($16,600). The prosecutor requested that the time Greiner spent in the detention center be included in her prison sentence. He also stated that 0.702 grams of hash oil was found in the defendant’s luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on February 17.
Greiner admitted to transporting the hashish oil, but insisted she was using it for medicinal purposes and was not selling drugs.
The basketball player was arrested at the Sheremetyevo airport on suspicion of smuggling hash oil into Russia. She pleaded guilty but stated that she had put the hashish oil in her bag in haste and had no criminal intent.
Greiner, 31, a WNBA star, won gold medals at the 2014 and 2018 World Championships as well as the 2016 and 2020 Olympics as a member of the US Women’s National Team. Prior to her arrest, he played for the Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg.
The defense team of the 31-year-old American asked the Russian court to acquit her of the drug charges. The verdict is expected on Thursday afternoon, as stated by her lawyer, Maria Blagovolina.
