Biden: The conviction of Greiner is unacceptable, she should be released immediately

“Russia is unjustly holding Britney. It’s unacceptable and I call on Russia to release her immediately,” the US president said

Joe Biden’s strong reaction was caused by the conviction of the American basketball player, Brittney Greiner, to nine years in prison after being found guilty of deliberately bringing cannabis-infused vapor cartridges into Russia.

“Today, American citizen Brittney Greiner received a prison sentence that is yet another reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully holding Brittney. It is unacceptable and I call on Russia to release her immediately to be with her beloved wife and teammates,” Biden said.

“My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue to bring Britney and Paul Whelan home safely as soon as possible,” the US president pledged.

Shortly after the court announced the sentence, Brittney Greiner’s defense said it would appeal, saying that during the trial the jury ignored all the evidence they had presented, as well as Greiner’s guilty plea. They said they were “disappointed” by the verdict.

It is noted that Whelan sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison for spying against Russia. He declares his innocence and maintains that he was the victim of fraud. Washington has requested his release.
