Towards a new “explosion” of China? After Pelosi, German MPs also want to go to Taiwan

by

According to German media, German MPs from the Bundestag’s Human Rights Committee are planning a visit to Taiwan in October.

After the visit of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan, German parliamentarians are also preparing a corresponding trip, it seems, around the end of October. According to information transmitted by German media, these are probably deputies from all six parliamentary groups of the German parliament, who participate in the Human Rights Committee of the Bundestag.

In fact, it is expected that two MPs will come from the Social Democrats and two from the Christian Democrats/Christian Socialists, that is, the two largest K.O. Specifically this trip, which according to information is independent of Pelosi’s visit and its international impact. it has been planned for some time and is expected to be combined with visits to Hong Kong and Japan.
According to the first program of German public television, the visit of the German parliamentary delegation to Taiwan is expected to take place between October 22 and 30, while as reported by the German news agency dpa, prior approval of the German parliament is required.

Strack-Zimmerman to DW: I want to visit Taiwan

At the same time, the chairwoman of the Defense Committee of the German Parliament, Marie Agnes Strack-Zimmerman from the Liberals, gave an interview to DW. Among other things, he was asked to comment on the tense situation in Taiwan and the escalation, with which China threatens. “I want to visit Taiwan,” he says characteristically, while regarding Nancy Pelosi’s much-lauded visit, he says that one must evaluate it “objectively, soberly and calmly”

As he characteristically notes, “there is the policy of one, unified China” which one must respect. “Taiwan belongs to China, but it has a different political system,” says Strack-Zimmerman, stressing that China’s aggression is unnecessary.

“Taiwan is a strong democracy. She deserves to have us on her side. Any politician who wants to travel there does not have to ask or not ask China or back off and say ‘we don’t do it’. The situation should not come to that. We must not be intimidated. It should be possible, in moderation, of course, to go to Taiwan for discussions and we will do it,” says the president of the Defense Committee to DW.
