German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that mandatory vaccination in the country should take effect in February.
The chancellor asked for the obligation after the discussion she had with Olaf Solz. Her proposal will be considered by the Bioethics Committee and if it gets the green light it will be put to a vote in January in parliament.
Omicron variant in Europe
The Omicron variant is likely to dominate Europe “in the coming months”, causing more than half of Covid-19 cases, according to a document from the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).
“Based on mathematical models developed by the ECDC, there are indications that Omicron is likely to cause more than half of all SARS-CoV-2 infections in the coming months in the European Union and the 27-nation European Economic Area. EU members and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
“Preliminary data show a significant advantage” of the new variant over the Delta variant, which has been dominant so far, the ECDC said in a statement.
