A 2-year-old boy died in a car in Kansas during a heat wave.
Police responded to a call around 3:40 p.m. Sunday in Scranton and found the boy unresponsive. The baby was taken to Stormont Vale Health in Topeka and pronounced dead.
Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells said the boy “got in the car” himself instead of being dropped off by an adult.
Topeka, about 20 miles north of Scranton, had a high of 92 degrees Fahrenheit that day, according to the National Weather Service.
“The incident is still under a thorough investigation. At this time, all evidence indicates that this was a tragic accident and no foul play was committed,” Wells told Newsweek.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the child’s cause of death.
If heat is determined to be the cause of his death, he would be the 14th person to die in a hot car this year, according to Child and Car Safety. About 38 children in the United States die each year in hot cars, about 87% of them under the age of three, according to an organization that tracks motor vehicle deaths.
In mid-June, in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, a three-month-old boy died after his parents left him in a hot car for several hours. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature that day was 92 degrees Fahrenheit.
And in late June, in Chesterfield, Virginia, a father who left his 18-month-old son in a hot car apparently killed himself after realizing his son was dead.
