USA: President Biden in flood-hit Kentucky

by

At least 37 people died in the floods that hit the region in late July, while many survivors lost their homes and property. The US president linked the disaster to climate change.

US President Joe Biden held an autopsy today in eastern Kentucky, where he witnessed the damaged homes, uprooted trees and mud-slicked roads left behind by the deadly floods that hit the region.

A heat wave has swept the US state as residents still struggle to recover from the devastation caused by flooding in late July. At least 37 people lost their lives, while many survivors lost their homes and property.

The US president linked the disaster to climate change. “As you all know, we have suffered the consequences of climate change,” Biden said, referring to natural disasters in various parts of the country.

Yesterday, Sunday, the Senate approved a bill that includes measures to combat climate change.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear gave an optimistic assessment of the work so far, saying that electricity has been restored everywhere with the exception of “about 200 homes”, while regarding the water supply he said that “more people have water than we thought would be possible » in the present phase.

The US president last week approved the disaster relief plan. First Lady Jill Biden personally helped send packages of clothing and emergency supplies to flood victims. This is President Biden’s first trip since recovering from Covid-19.

The mammoth operation to repair the damage and rebuild the area began last week after the waters receded and crews gained access to remote communities.
