The Russian authorities carried out raid on the journalist’s house Marina Ovsianikova accusing her of defaming the Russian military.

Security officers entered the home without waiting for her lawyer to arrive, according to lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov of civil rights group OVD-Info.

Ovsyannikova, who has already been ordered to pay several fines for her criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, faces several years in prison.

According to Zakhvatov, the house search may be connected to the journalist’s recent protest, where she held a placard reading: “Putin is a murderer, his soldiers are fascists,” in central Moscow near the Kremlin.

With the tightening of relevant laws, actions defaming the Russian armed forces are punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Ovsyannikova, as an employee of Russian state television, had held an anti-war protest banner during a telecast in March.

The banner read: “Stop the war. Don’t believe the propaganda. You are being lied to.”

The journalist, who until then was considered loyal to the government line, received worldwide recognition for her act after which she lived for some time abroad and wrote for the German newspaper Die Welt.
