With these sanctions, the US “affirms its commitment to fight corruption” everywhere in the world, the head of US diplomacy underlines.

The American government today accused him Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velasquez and the former prosecutor Juan Carlos Duarte for corruption related to bribery of an official and interference with public inquiry. He therefore barred Velázquez and Duarte and their family members from entering the United States.

According to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Duarte – a close friend of Velázquez – bribed a high-ranking Paraguayan official to block an investigation into the country’s vice president’s financial interests.

In addition, Duarte is charged with breach of confidentiality as a legal advisor to the construction project of the Yasireta hydroelectric plant on Paraguay’s border with Argentina.

With these sanctions, the US “affirms its commitment to fight corruption” everywhere in the world, the head of US diplomacy underlines.

Last July, the United States announced an entry ban on former Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes, accusing him of corruption and ties to “terrorist” groups.
