The Iranian authorities have not yet officially commented on the assassination attempt against the 75-year-old intellectual.
The main Iranian ultraconservative Kaihan newspaper today congratulated the man who yesterday, Friday, stabbed the world-famous Briton in the USA author Salman Rushdie, author of the “Satanic Verses”, who has been the target of one for over 30 years Iranian fetfa.
“Well done to this courageous and dutiful man who attacked the renegade and evil Salman Rushdie,” writes the newspaper, whose head is appointed by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Let us kiss the hand of him that tore the throat of the enemy of God with a knife,” the article continues.
The attacker stabbed Rushdie in the neck and abdomen at a cultural center auditorium in Chautauqua, in northwestern New York state. According to his literary agent, the author is intubated and may lose one of his eyes.
The Iranian authorities have not yet officially commented on the assassination attempt against the 75-year-old intellectual.
Toeing the official line, all of Iran’s media labeled Rushdi a “renegade”, with the exception of the reformist newspaper Etemad.
The state newspaper Iran wrote that “the devil’s neck was cut with a razor.”
“I will not cry for a writer who denounces with endless hatred and endless contempt for Muslims and Islam,” Mohammad Maradi, an adviser to the group of negotiators on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program, wrote on Twitter.
“Rushdi is a pawn of empire posing as a postcolonial novelist,” he added.
“Isn’t it strange that while we’re getting closer to a potential deal on the nuclear program, the United States is pretending that an attack on Bolton (the former White House national security adviser) was planned … and then this happens?” , he wonders.
Salman Rushdie had provoked angry reactions in a part of the Muslim world with the publication, in September 1988, of The Satanic Verses. The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatfa in 1989 calling for the author’s assassination.
