Police said the man fired several shots into the air along East Capitol Street
A man died early this morning after crashing his car into a barricade near the Capitol while firing shots into the air, police said. As he tried to get out of the car, he was engulfed in flames after the fire broke out shortly after 4:00 a.m. (Washington local time) between the streets surrounding the Capitol, according to Capitol Police.
“At this time, it does not appear that the man targeted any members of Congress. Members of Congress are on vacation, and it does not appear that weapons were used by officers,” Capitol Police said.
Police said the man fired several shots into the air along East Capitol Street.
As police approached the scene, the man shot himself, and no one else was injured, according to police.
The case of the death of the unknown man is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police of Washington, while his identity was not immediately known, as well as any details about his motives.
