An 8-year-old girl was hit and killed by a rally car as she tried to cross the road to reach her sister.
On the Portuguese island of Madeira, a girl crashed at high speed before hurtling onto the motorway, believing the last rally car had overtaken her.
Television footage from the scene showed the car colliding with the girl before coming to a stop in a cloud of white smoke.
Shocked onlookers were seen running to the accident for help.
The incident occurred during the 63rd Madeira Wine Rally, which attracts thousands of spectators every year.
The girl, whose name has not been released, received emergency medical care at the scene.
He was transferred to the Dr. Nerio Mendonca Hospital in Funchal, where he died shortly after.


A bystander at the scene said: “I’m sure he didn’t see the car coming. He was going too fast.”
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that the young man involved in the accident did not survive his injuries,” rally organizers said in a statement.
“My condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered his condolences to “grieving family and friends.”
