by

The German Consulate General in São Paulo is now headed by a woman for the first time in over a hundred years. With stints at the country’s embassies in Beijing and Brasília, diplomat Martina Hackelberg has just been appointed consul general.

The German representation has been in São Paulo for 153 years. This will be the first time, however, that the institution will have a portrait of a woman in its gallery of former holders.

“São Paulo is synonymous with innovation, diversity and energy. This is where Germany and Brazil can develop the full potential of our partnership”, says Hackelberg about the new post.

For the past three years, the diplomat has served as the deputy foreign minister’s office manager in Berlin. In the Brazilian capital, she was the Culture and Press attaché at the embassy. She has also represented Germany at the United Nations in Vienna.
