Continued gang violence is deepening the crisis in the Caribbean country, the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

Four members of Congress have called on President Joe Biden’s administration to name a new special envoy for Haiti as ongoing gang violence deepens the crisis in the Caribbean nation, the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

The post was created after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021. But Daniel Foote, a career diplomat, resigned from the post just months after his appointment in protest at the mass deportations of Haitian migrants and politics more broadly. of the USA against Haiti. No youth has been named.

The situation in Haiti has deteriorated rapidly since then. Clashes between heavily armed gangs fighting for territory and influence have killed hundreds of people and displaced thousands more, according to NGO and UN estimates. In recent weeks, fighting has even broken out in the center of the capital, not far from the seat of government.

In a letter dated Aug. 15, four Democratic congresswomen, Val Demings, Yvette Clark, Ayanna Presley and Sheila Serfilus-McCormick (the latter is the daughter of Haitian immigrants) stress that the lack of a special envoy “undoubtedly undermines efforts of the government to support the people of Haiti”.

“K. President, in recognition of the extremely urgent nature of the matter, we ask that you name a new special charge d’affaires” to Haiti, the letter states, noting that at this time, the country does not even have an elected government.

The Miami Herald newspaper was the first to publish a report on the initiative of the four congresswomen.

The White House did not immediately respond when asked by Reuters for comment.
