One of New York’s 9/11 museums will be permanently closed today. We are just weeks away from the 21st anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in the continental United States.

A few blocks south of Ground Zero, the 9/11 Tribute Museum is closing after a month-long struggle to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Museo del Homenaje was famous for its so-called “personal stories.” According to its website, it offered guided tours with “families, survivors, first responders, and people living in lower Manhattan.”

The National 9/11 Memorial and Ground Zero Museum, another great museum, will remain open.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit museums especially hard. The museum relies heavily on assistance for funding, with most of its income coming from ticket sales.

“Due to financial difficulties, including loss of revenue due to the pandemic, we are unable to generate sufficient funds to continue operating the physical museum,” said Jennifer Adams, the museum’s co-founder and CEO.

Annual intake was just 26,000 last year compared to 150,000 in 2019.

More than 5 million people have visited the museum since it opened in 2006.

The museum plans to maintain an online presence where the stories the exhibits tell can be preserved.

However, many are upset that there is no longer a physical space where survivors can tell their stories.

Adams told the New York Post: “It’s a huge loss for those who call it a second home.

The physical collection of the artifact has been moved to the New York State Museum in Albany.

The museum’s administration is asking state and local politicians to step in to preserve the collection.

A petition circulating on change.org calls on Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams to participate.

Politicians in New York have pledged to help the 9/11 Tribute Museum deal with financial problems related to the pandemic. There was no help,” the petitioner said two weeks ago.

It currently has some 33,300 signatures.
