Afghanistan: France evacuates more than 300 people from Afghanistan

by

France has evacuated 258 Afghans and 11 French nationals, about 60 Dutch nationals and an unidentified number of people linked to them, a French foreign ministry spokesman said on Friday.

The operation was organized with the help of Qatar, the ministry said in a statement.

Among those evacuated were Afghans at risk, such as journalists as well as people with ties to France, including workers employed by the French army. As of September 10, 110 French and 396 Afghans have been evacuated from Afghanistan on 10 Qatar-assisted flights, the statement added.

France and Qatar carried out a joint humanitarian mission on a Qatari plane on Thursday, delivering medical equipment, food and winter supplies to international organizations operating in the country, a French foreign ministry spokeswoman said.

The United Nations Development Program (UJNDP) described this week a “worrying” socio-economic outlook for the next 13 months. Afghanistan has been struggling to cope with a sharp drop in international development aid since the Taliban seized power in August, and according to the UNDP, poverty could become near-universal by mid-2022.
