Hossein Amir-Abdullahian: Extravagant US Positions Hinder Iran Nuclear Deal

After six rounds of intense unsuccessful negotiations in Vienna due to the extravagant US positions, we will start a new round and the main objective is to exercise the rights of the Iranians and the elimination of all sanctions imposed by the United States, unilaterally withdrawn from the Action Plan Global Assembly (JCPOA) on May 8, 2018.

There is an international consensus that such illegal US actions are in total disregard of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, are aimed at undermining multilateralism, and pose a major threat to international peace and security.

Despite the inauguration of the new US government, the policy of imposing sanctions on Iran continued. The aim is to prevent the members of the agreement and the international community from benefiting from the privileges enshrined in UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The governments of the three European countries that participated in the agreement practically followed, illegally and unacceptable, the US with their silence and inaction.

These realities must be a beacon for the future. The continued destructive behavior of the US has raised the question of whether Americans are truly willing to fulfill their obligations and whether they are ready to abandon their previous failed policies. This question does not seem difficult to answer.

No one can question Iran’s good faith in fulfilling its full commitments. After the US illegal withdrawal, Iran fulfilled its obligations for one year. However, after a year of strategic patience, Iran respected its rights under Articles 26 and 36 of the agreement and, as of May 8, 2019, suspended, in stages, the execution of part of its obligations.

Without changing the situation, the Iranian Parliament approved, on December 2, 2020, the law “Strategic Action Plan to lift sanctions and protect the interests of the Iranian people”. The law requires the government to gradually suspend implementation of all voluntary commitments in the agreement, unless the other parties fully comply with their obligations.

the way forward

Iran, despite all the West’s irresponsibility in the treaty, is now ready to reach a good deal with the P4+1 [grupo formado por China, Rússia, França, Reino Unido e Alemanha], in order to show goodwill and with the aim of eliminating unilateral and illegal sanctions.

We must never forget that the White House is the main cause of the current situation and it was Iran that left the agreement alive. The fact is, without the removal of all sanctions, there is no way back for the US.

Resolution 2231 calls on all members to “take such measures as may be appropriate to support the implementation of the agreement and to refrain from actions contrary to the nuclear agreement”. The goal must be full implementation of the agreement, to normalize stable trade relations with Iran.

Iran is prepared to suspend its retaliatory measures if there are guarantees and review of the damages, in addition to the effective and verifiable elimination of sanctions.

The possible return of the US to the agreement will not be of interest to us. Iran will not agree to enter into negotiations on issues beyond the JCPOA. This opportunity is not a window that will stay open forever. Along with strong diplomatic efforts to remove sanctions, Iran has effective plans to neutralize sanctions. Undoubtedly, Tehran is committed to protecting the achievements of its scientists.

Iran will work with genuine will and good faith in the new Vienna round of negotiations to reach a credible agreement that will effectively lead to the removal of sanctions. The Iranian nuclear negotiation team is actively present in Vienna and serves the interests and rights of the Iranian people.
