A retired pub owner made a “miraculous recovery” hours after his death with a special treat: a pint of Guinness mixed with three raw eggs.
Maggie Ives, just over 78, suffered from chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease and was admitted to a nursing home for end-of-life care.
His family, fearing that he might not survive the night, was encouraged to make plans for the funeral.
But a lifelong smoker, he managed to turn the tables and fight back. This is thanks to the faithful “little beard” of him.
Maggie, who also has Parkinson’s disease, said: I feel like I’ve risen from the dead.
The lady who received me, Subi, said goodbye to me that night. She didn’t expect to see me in the morning.
133 kinds of antibiotics were injected. He didn’t even know where she was. I don’t remember the paramedics coming and taking me away.
“When I went out to sleep all night, I asked the staff if I could try an old recipe from years ago when I was feeling sick.
“I am a raw egg and Guinness devotee, I swear.
“When I was feeling down, I would always have a pint of Guinness with two raw eggs. For a pint, you need three eggs.
“I just put an egg in it and drink it without stirring. It does the trick.
“As soon as I woke up in the nursing home after being hospitalized, I ordered Guinness and eggs and literally felt better within days.
“Of course the staff here are great, but I really swear by my little beard.
“But I made it through the night. After taking a small pill every day, sometimes multiple times, I didn’t feel any better.”
The widow Maggie was living in a shelter in Malvern, Worcestershire, when she fell in February and broke her pelvis.
He was taken to Henwick Grange and received hospice care for other health problems.
Maggie, who was also a nurse and turns 79 next month, added:
All I can say is that I was there for 22 weeks. I kept talking over and over, it was driving me crazy.
“I had hallucinations. I was at the end of my life. They called my brother and sister to document my death and go to the funeral home.
“Coming to Henwick Grange has given me a new lease of life. From laundry to housekeeping, from caretakers to management, I can’t fault the staff here.
“I order what I want to eat. If I want shrimp every day, I have shrimp every day. They are all very tasty.
“I will stay here until they kick me out. This is my house. They are my angels. I feel as happy and strong as I have felt over the years.”
Suzanne Mitchell AKA Sub Nursing Assistant and Assistant Manager AKA Sub said: It just got better and better. he is very strong. I admire his spirit.
“I have never seen such a dramatic change.”
Business Development Manager Lisa Odlin said, We have a positive, open and welcoming culture.
