The French president called on his ministers to show seriousness, credibility and not succumb to the temptation of demagoguery
The president Emmanuel Macron warned the French today of “the great upheaval” that marks this year’s return from the summer holidays, with “the end of abundance”, “certainties” and “carelessness”.
“We are experiencing a major upheaval,” uannounced the head of state as a prelude to the first cabinet meeting after the summer vacation taking place today at the presidential palace, citing the recent “series of serious crises”, from Ukraine to the drought.
“The moment we live in may seem structured by a series of serious crises (…) and some might think that we are destined to be perpetually managing crises or emergencies. I believe for my part that what we are living through is probably of the order of a great upheaval or a great disturbance“, said Emmanuel Macron during his speech before the ministers, which was exceptionally broadcast by the media.
At a time when, faced with this situation, “our compatriots may react with a lot of concern”, Macron called on the members of the government to “say things”, to “name them very clearly and without catastrophizing”.
“I expect the government to respect the word given and the commitments we have made to the nation“, he added.
“What I wish we can do in the coming weeks and the coming months is to reassert a very strong unity of the government, of the majority forces” around “a course that will allow us to consolidate our sovereignty, the French and the our European independence“, he added.
In the face of “the rise of illiberal regimes” and “the strengthening of authoritarian regimes”, the president called on his ministers to show “seriousness”, “reliability” and not succumb to the temptation of “demagoguery”.
“It is easy to promise everything, sometimes to say everything and whatever happens. Let us not succumb to these temptations, it is the temptation of demagoguery. They flourish today in all democracies, in a complex and frightening world. It may still seem charming to say what people want to hear (…), but we must first think and question whether it is effective and useful“, Macron added without citing specific conclusions.
