“She was a thirty-year-old girl, particularly intelligent, who spoke six languages,” writes the newspaper La Repubblica.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica, with an investigation carried out in collaboration with the German magazine Der Spiegel and journalistic research websites, revealed that from 2008 until 2018, a Russian agent managed to infiltrate the NATO base in Naples.

The investigation revealed that the agent, who went by the name Maria Adela Kufeld Rivera, used Russian intelligence passports.

“She was a thirty-year-old girl, particularly intelligent, who spoke six languages,” writes the newspaper La Repubblica.

It could not be established whether the spy “stole” classified information, but it is clear that she came into contact with an area that is the highest level of military, operational power of Western countries in Europe. Maria Adela, according to the Italian press, very quickly met members of the staff of the NATO base in Naples, and took part in the secular life of the big city of the Italian South. “Before he disappeared, he conquered many hearts, and caused a series of romantic disappointments,” writes the Italian newspaper.

“It is clear that this whole case raises a more general security issue, in terms of the protection of the military secrets of the NATO base in Naples and the US Sixth Fleet,” many Italian analysts emphasize.

According to La Repubblica, finally, sources in the Italian secret services say that about a third of Russian diplomats in Italy (about 80 out of a total of 240) are said to be members of Moscow’s three secret services.
