A disabled woman has died and three adult children have been arrested after being found in “filthy conditions” with mold growing on their bodies.
Patricia Martinez, 57, of San Antonio, Texas, died at the hospital on Saturday, two days after deputies rescued her from her home where she was receiving hospice care, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said Martinez’s skin was moldy and the room was infested with bugs.
“She was found wearing feces-soaked adult diapers, which led to physical infections elsewhere on her body,” Salazar told News 4 San Antonio on Friday.
Adult Protective Services (APS) notified the sheriff’s department after becoming concerned about Martinez’s “rapid decline,” Salazar said.
The Martinez children, Oscar Dominguez, 37, Roxana Calero, 24, and Pedro Luis Calero, 18, were charged Monday with aggravated assault on a disabled person, a first-degree felony.
It is not yet known if the charges in Martinez’s death will be elevated to child homicide.
The children lived in the house with Martinez and took care of him. They were responsible for feeding him, bathing him, giving him medicine, and arranging for his medical care.
“None of them seemed to be doing what they were supposed to be doing,” Salazar said.
Before Martinez’s death, Salazar told KENS5: May God have mercy on your souls when their time comes. ”
The investigation of the cause of death is ongoing.
All three boys are being held at the Bexar County Jail on $85,000 bond.
Martinez’s death comes seven months after Lacy Ellen Fletcher, a 36-year-old autistic woman, was found dead at her parents’ home in Slaughter, Louisiana. Fletcher’s body lay on the couch surrounded by her own excrement.
