Stoltenberg: Russia’s ability in the Arctic is a strategic challenge for NATO

by

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization referred to the changes that have been made on the geopolitical map in recent months – Meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau

Russia’s capabilities in the North are a strategic challenge to NATO and the alliance needs a strong allied presence in the Arctic region, NATO’s secretary general said today Jens Stoltenberg during his visit to Canada.

“The importance of the far north is growing for NATO and for Canada because we see a significant Russian military build-up with new bases, new weapons systems,” Stoltenberg said as he stood next to the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau in Cold Lake, Alberta.

“The geopolitical situation has changed in the last few months, hence the fact that we understand that the Russia is a growing concern for all of us, it makes it timely for us to share with the secretary general and the NATO all the things that Canada does through NORAD,” Trudeau said, referring to the North American defense agency in which the US and Canada participate.
