Nearly 80,000 children in the US were confirmed to have been infected with the novel coronavirus last week, according to the latest data compiled by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the nation’s Children’s Hospital Association.

This year in the US, about 6.5 million children have been infected with the virus, including 358,000 in the last four weeks. Their total number since the outbreak of the pandemic has reached 14.4 million, according to the data. They correspond to 18.4% of all cases.

There is an urgent need to gather age-specific data on how severe the variants and sub-variants of the virus cause of COVID-19 and the potential long-term health consequences, he stressed.

“It is important to identify and address the long-term impact of the pandemic on the physical, mental and social well-being of this generation of children and young people,” the AAP insists in the report.
