Chile announced on Saturday the first case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in its territory, which was detected in a traveler who arrived from Ghana on November 25.
“This foreigner, who lives in Chile, entered the country with a negative molecular test” but the additional mandatory test on arrival at the airport gave a positive result, explained in a statement the regional Ministry of Health of the city of Valparaΐso, 120 km west of the capital Santiago.
The traveler, who had taken both doses of the Pfizer vaccine, “is in good health and has been isolated” for the first year at home before having to go to a health facility, the source said.
Chile has more than 1.7 million cases of Covid-19 and more than 38,000 people have died from complications of the disease since the first case of coronavirus was detected in its territory on March 3, 2020.
In terms of vaccination, Chile is one of the most advanced countries in the world, with 91.22% of the population eligible for vaccination already vaccinated in both doses.
