Amid confirmation of the arrival of the omicron variant in Brazil, with at least three cases in São Paulo, the state has, this Saturday (4), the lowest number of hospitalized in ICUs (intensive care units) because of Covid-19 since April 2020, the period when the pandemic began.

There are currently 982 patients, according to the State Health Department.

São Paulo also has 1,168 coronavirus patients in ward beds, totaling 2,150 people hospitalized with Covid.

In a record, during the peak of the second wave, in April 2021, the state had more than 31,000 patients hospitalized for coronavirus infection – 13,023 in ICUs and 18,125 in wards.

According to the Health Department, ICU bed occupancy rates are also among the lowest in the history of the pandemic, with 21.5% in the state in general and 26.6% in Greater São Paulo. By comparison, in March 2021, bed occupancy rates were 92.3% and 92.6%, respectively.

Like sheet recently showed, even with the drop in admissions by Covid in private hospitals in São Paulo, institutions are on alert. The attention is because some places have beds with more than 90% occupancy with other health demands that were dammed up during the pandemic.

Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, for example, once again registered a great demand for elective surgeries. While the first has done more than 800 per week, the second points out that the number of procedures is 15% above the rates recorded before the pandemic.

Hospitalizations for respiratory syndrome also rose again among adults in Brazil, from 6,000 cases at the end of October to 6,600 in the last week of November, a 10% jump.

São Paulo has 76.75% of its population with the complete vaccination schedule, and 84.8% with at least one dose of immunizing against the coronavirus, according to data from the state government’s Vacinometer this Saturday night.

Regarding the adult population, 101.28% received at least one dose of the vaccine – a number reached at the end of October – and 94.25% completed the vaccination schedule.

The state secretariat took into account the projection made by the IBGE for the size of the population in 2021. According to the estimate, there are 35.3 million people aged 18 and over.
