Bulgarian students won two gold, two silver and one bronze medals at the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad held in Georgia, the Ministry of Education and Science said in a press release this week. The Bulgarian team competed against 240 other participants from 48 countries.
The gold medals were won by Alexander Prodanov of the Lyceum of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Kazanlak and Yavor Yordanov of the National Lyceum of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Sofia. Margulan Ismoldaev of the Lyceum of Mathematics in Varna and Bayan Getsev of the Lyceum of Mathematics in Sofia won silver medals, and Konstantin Krastev of the Lyceum of Natural Sciences in Burgas won the bronze.
The Bulgarian team was led by Nikola Karavassilev, a teacher at the private school Izzi Science for Kids, and Zachary Donchev from the Institute of Astronomy and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad was organized for the first time in 2007. Bulgaria’s first participation in the competition was in Poland in 2011.
