Leiner Montero, 37, the director of an online radio station, and Delia Contreras, 39, the director of the Sol Digital news website, were killed near the community of Fundacion, in the province of Magdalena.

Two journalists were shot and killed by unknown assailants on a motorcycle who attacked them while returning from a religious festival.

Leiner Montero, 37, the director of an online radio station, and Delia Contreras, 39, the director of the Sol Digital news website, were killed near the community of Fundacion, in the province of Magdalena. They were on a highway between the towns of El Copey and Fundacion when “two criminals” approached their car and opened fire, said Col. Andres Serna, the Magdalena police chief.

According to Serna, Montero had earlier engaged in a verbal altercation with other individuals. “After this intolerant action, the journalist decided to leave the celebration in his car, taking Delia and another man with him.”

It remains unclear whether these two incidents are related.

“We are committed to the citizens of Magdalena to clarify as soon as possible this sad case with the victims of two journalists, respected in their union, their families and their acquaintances,” Serna added.

Although authorities say it is not certain that the killings are related to the victims’ professional status, the Freedom of the Press Foundation has called for a swift investigation, which should take into account the work of the two journalists.
