Police in Detroit, in the northern US, yesterday Sunday turned out to be a manhunt after four people were shot “at random” and three of them succumbed to their injuries, according to the authorities.
James White, the chief of police in this city in the state of Michigan, clarified while speaking to the media that the first three victims — two women and a man — were killed in different locations of the western part of Detroit in the early hours of the morning.
After noticing the suspect looking inside cars, the fourth victim, a man, asked him to move away before he opened fire, the police chief added.
Photos of the suspect — described as a young African-American man wearing black and a hooded sweatshirt — have been released, and authorities are urging anyone who recognizes him to contact police as soon as possible.
The attacks appear to have been carried out “completely at random,” Police Chief White insisted during a news conference.
One victim was “waiting for a bus”, the second “had walked his dog” and the third “was just in the street”, he described.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said for his part that officers will “sweep several square kilometers” as they expect the suspect to “re-emerge.” “This man has already shot four people,” he warned.
The U.S. is plagued by gun violence at an alarming rate, and members of Congress are failing to adopt measures to tighten gun control even though the majority of Americans are in favor of it.
