A school bus carrying students on a field trip collided with a tractor trailer, killing one student and injuring six others.

Kiara Gordon of Wide Ruins, Arizona has been identified by her family as a student who died in a tragic accident on Sunday morning.

“He had a beautiful soul. He came from a small and large Navajo community. He was focused on his education and what he wanted to do after high school.”

Gordon turned 17 just a month ago.

The collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. after traffic backed up from an earlier collision on Interstate 40 in eastern Arizona.

A tow truck rear-ends a school bus, forcing the vehicle into a pickup due to traffic delays.

There were 19 other students on the bus. Six students were seriously injured as a result of the accident, but no other details about them have been known so far.

The accident happened near Saunders, about 55 miles east of Holbrook, where students attend Holbrook Indian School.

The school’s assistant principal, Ulises Campos, said the students went on a field trip to Window Rock. Window Rock is the capital of the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American-owned land in the United States.

“What worries us right now are the grieving parents and families,” Campos said. I ask for your prayers on behalf of those affected by this tragedy.”

Navajo County has extended its condolences to the victims of the accident.

“The true beauty of rural Navajo County is our close-knit community, and every loss is the ripple effect we all feel. We are working with our friends and neighbors to do this.”
