Chaos from severe weather in Michigan: 14-year-old girl dead – Hundreds of thousands of homes without power

One 14 year old girl died and hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents were left without power as the storm that hit the US state uprooted trees and caused extensive damage to the power grid. The power outages affected more than 375,000 households and businesses, the electricity providers announced on Tuesday morning.

Dozens of schools in southeast Michigan, including about 20 in Detroit, were forced to close due to the blackout.

In Monroe, one 14 years old electrocuted when she came into contact with a power cable that – due to strong winds – had fallen onto the road outside her house. Despite the rescuers’ efforts to keep her alive, the 14-year-old died.

Storms also hit parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. According to the Ohio Fire Department, a woman was killed by a falling tree.

DTE Energy reported damage to 3,300 power lines and said it was sending crews from other states to restore power as soon as possible. He estimated that by Thursday evening, electricity will be restored to 80% of its customers who were left without electricity.

For its part, Consumers Energy announced that 111,000 of its customers remained without power on Tuesday morning, after overnight crews had restored power to about 40,000 households and businesses.
