A Ring Doorbell camera captured the moment a father shot his daughter’s ex-boyfriend as he tried to break into their home.
James Riley, 22, forced entry on July 31 by repeatedly ringing the bell and kicking the door.
Despite Mitchell Dacre’s warning that he “had a gun”, he eventually managed to break the latch and open it a few inches.
A resonant video shows Riley being hit three times from the inside, once in each shoulder and once in the back.
He can be seen on his way to the garden before being hit by a car.
He died minutes before the sheriff arrived in Sydney, Ohio.
Dacre’s daughter, Alison, left Riley on a voicemail last night after breaking up with Riley 18 months ago.
During the 911 call, Alison was heard saying, “Dad, there was nothing you could do, you saved my life.”
The images and the phone call were among the evidence seen by a grand jury that found Dacre guilty of murder in an 8-0 vote.
Ohio law allows homeowners to use deadly force if they feel threatened.
Some neighbors, including Jeffrey Hereford, objected to the largesse shown to him, saying, “If he entered the house, why did he shoot through the door?”
Riley’s sister, Jessica Colbert, told the court:
“I hope your days are more miserable than ever. You are a poor excuse for anyone to be with my daughter.”
