Thirty-one people drowned when their bus overturned and sank into an inflated river in central Kenya on Saturday, the governor said today, adding that the toll could rise further.
An earlier report on Saturday said more than 20 people had been killed in the crash.
The bus, which was carrying a church choir and other people to a wedding in Kitty County, overturned before sinking.
Kitwi Governor Charity Ngilu said 31 bodies had been found by army divers since Saturday as search and rescue operations continued.
“Today, we were able to retrieve seven (corpses). There are still corpses on the bus,” he told reporters today. “It’s so, but so sad. We lost so many lives.”
People on the bus, however, managed to escape on Saturday before it sank quickly into the Enziou River.
The exact number of passengers on the bus when it fell into the river, almost 200 kilometers east of the capital Nairobi, is not yet known.
