Five members of the Extinction Rebellion organization entered the British Parliament and shouted slogans – Parliament is not in session at this time
Environmental organization activists Extinction Rebellion organized a rally today inside the British Parliament and stuck themselves around the Speaker’s chair.
The photo posted by the group on Twitter shows five of its members inside its meeting room House of Commons holding banners with slogans such as “Let the people decide” and “Citizens’ Assembly now”.
Parliament is currently in recess. A part of it is usually open to the public, but access to the meeting room is usually only given to groups of visitors accompanied by a tour guide.
“We are in crisis and what happens every day in this room is a mockery for all of us, we cannot continue like this. We need a new way of making decisions, where more voices will be heard,” said one of the protesters in a video.
The protesters were then removed from the security of the building, the Parliament announced.
Other members of the organization hung banners from a scaffolding and some were chained at the gates outside the building.
The episode raises questions about the building’s security and how visitors, who are screened by guards at the entrance, managed to gain access to the room where elected MPs and the prime minister gather and speak.
Extinction Rebellion recently caused traffic chaos in central London, calling for urgent action to tackle climate change. In today’s mobilization, the first phase of its actions for September, 50 of its members participated. According to this group, three of the protesters had booked to participate in the official tour of the Parliament.
