Ukraine: Ukrainian forces hit a Russian base in Enerhodar

by

The city of Enerhodar is located near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and has been occupied by Russian forces.

The Ukrainian military said it carried out strikes today against Russian positions in the area around the southern city of Enerhodar, near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Kyiv accuses Russia of removing its weaponry from the station before it was inspected by International Atomic Energy Agency experts.

An IAEA team gathers evidence at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, on the outskirts of Enerhodar, which has been occupied by Russian forces.

The disclosure by the Joint Chiefs of Staff was unusual, as the military rarely releases details on specific targets.

“It has been confirmed that in the area around the cities of Kherson and Enerhodar, precision strikes by our armed forces destroyed three enemy artillery systems as well as an ammunition depot, killing a number of Russian soldiers,” said a post by the general staff on Facebook, in the context of daily press coverage.

As of this post, no further details of the strikes are being reported. Kherson is located almost 300 km southwest of Enerhodar.

The Ukrainian military also said Russian forces removed “all their military equipment from the site of the nuclear plant” ahead of the arrival on Thursday of the IAEA mission, members of which remain at the plant where they work.

The Zaporizhia station was seized by Russian troops in March, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly blamed Kyiv for the nuclear plant bombings. Ukraine rejects the charge, saying pro-Russian forces were responsible for the attacks on the nuclear plant.

On Thursday morning, before the IAEA mission arrived, Ukrainian authorities accused the Russians of shelling Enerhodar, a town they control, with the intention of pinning the blame on Kyiv.

In a video message broadcast on Thursday evening, after the first statements of the IAEA director general, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his displeasure, considering that the international organization should have requested the withdrawal of Russian soldiers from the nuclear power plant.
