This is the moment the Vice President of Argentina was shot in the face until the gun jams.
Christina Fernández de Kirchner got out of her car last night after a near miss outside her home in Buenos Aires.
An armed man stepped out of the crowd of his supporters and pointed his gun at the politician’s head at close range.
However, the man was soon run over by Mrs. Fernández de Kirchner’s guards and arrested.
President Alberto Fernández said the pistol jammed when the attackers tried to fire.
“He put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger,” he said on state television after the incident.
He said the gun was loaded with five rounds, but “did not fire when the trigger was pulled.”
The country’s former leader, the vice president, was not injured.
Witness Gina Devey said she heard “a gun pointed” but didn’t realize it was a gun until security approached.
Fernández, who has nothing to do with the vice president, called it “the most serious incident since we restored democracy” in 1983 under a military dictatorship.
He called on political leaders and the public to stop the shooting attempts.
The attacks come as the vice president faces trial over corruption charges during his 2007-2015 presidency. He vehemently denies it and has seen his followers besiege his house in the exclusive Recoleta neighborhood of the Argentine capital.
The suspect has been identified as Fernando André Sabag Montiel, a Brazilian of Argentine nationality, a Security Ministry official said.
He has no criminal record, authorities said, adding that the gun was a .32-caliber Bersa.
The president declared Friday a holiday, which allowed the Argentine people to express themselves in peace and harmony in defense of life, democracy and solidarity with the vice president.
Last week, supporters of the vice president gathered in the streets around his home as prosecutors sought a 12-year prison sentence for Fernández de Kirchner and a lifetime ban from holding public office in a corruption scandal. .
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, government officials were quick to condemn what they called an assassination attempt.
Economy Minister Sergio Massa said: “When hatred and violence are imposed by ideological debates, societies are destroyed and the situation we find ourselves in today is an assassination attempt.”
