The distinguished epidemiologist and frequent guest on the covid-19 pandemic TV show Karl Lauterbach will be the new German Federal Minister, the Social Democrats (SPD), the largest party in the new ruling coalition, announced today.
Lauterbach, an SPD lawmaker, has gained publicity in recent months as an expert on the pandemic and has become known for his calls for the Germans to comply with restrictive measures to curb covid-19.
Last week he even expressed his indignation when 50,000 spectators watched a football match. “There should not be more than 5,000 spectators in any match,” Lauerbach said.
Ahead of his announcement of his appointment as federal health minister, Marcus Zeder, the Bavarian prime minister and head of the Christian Social Union (CSU), had voiced support for Lauterbach.
Zender, who also has a hard line on health restrictions and has advocated for mandatory vaccination against covid-19, said Germany needed a health minister with knowledge of the subject.
“I believe Lauterbach can do that,” Zender said yesterday, speaking on a popular television show, adding that he would welcome the appointment of an epidemiologist to the health ministry.
