The Kremlin on Sunday blamed European politicians for problems with the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which have halted gas supplies to Europe, saying economic sanctions imposed on Russia are making it difficult for Russian energy giant Gazprom to proceed with pipeline maintenance.
THE Gazprom announced on Friday that the main pipeline carrying natural gas from Russia to Germany would remain out of service indefinitely, despite its earlier announcement that maintenance work would last three days and be completed by Saturday morning.
“If the Europeans in an absolutely irrational way make the decision to refuse to do maintenance on their equipment, or rather on the equipment belonging to Gazprom, which they are contractually obliged to do, Gazprom is not responsible,” Dmitry said. Kremlin spokesman Peskov in an interview on Russian state television, as reported by the Interfax agency.
“It is the responsibility of those politicians who make decisions on sanctions,” he added.
Gazprom said on Friday that it cannot set a timetable for resuming natural gas deliveries through Nord Stream, as an oil leak detected prevents one of the pipeline’s turbines from operating safely.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told Russian state television that in order for the equipment to continue operating, Siemens Energy must meet the terms of the contract to maintain the turbine.
“All the terms of the maintenance contract have been flagrantly violated, the terms for the transfer of this equipment have been violated,” Novak stressed.
For its part, Siemens Energy responded that it has not been asked to proceed with the maintenance of the Nord Stream turbine, underlining that it is available to do so.
