The “smiling” Pope of the Vatican, John Paul I (born Albino Luciani) was canonized on Saturday in the Vatican by Pope Francis.
Thousands of worshipers had flocked to St. Peter’s Square to witness the canonization ceremony, which is a step before canonization.

Pope John Paul I had the shortest tenure in the papacy since 1605: he served as pope from August 26, 1978 until his sudden death 33 days later.
During his short tenure, he defended the Roman Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion and contraception, but also tried to reform institutions in the state and root out corruption from the Vatican.
