Last year, Pope Francis credited the late Pope with the miraculous healing of a girl from Argentina. For canonization, a second miracle is required from the Vatican.

The “smiling” Pope of the Vatican, John Paul I (born Albino Luciani) was canonized on Saturday in the Vatican by Pope Francis.

Thousands of worshipers had flocked to St. Peter’s Square to witness the canonization ceremony, which is a step before canonization.

Last year, Pope Francis credited John Paul I with the miraculous healing of a girl from Argentina. For canonization, a second miracle is required from the Vatican.

Pope John Paul I had the shortest tenure in the papacy since 1605: he served as pope from August 26, 1978 until his sudden death 33 days later.

During his short tenure, he defended the Roman Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion and contraception, but also tried to reform institutions in the state and root out corruption from the Vatican.
