Tsavousoglou: Turkey does not ask for money from Qatar

by

Turkey is not asking Qatar to send it money to help it deal with the collapse of the pound, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoγlu told a news conference in Doha, adding that the talks he had prior to President Tayyip Erdoτοan’s visit to Erdoτοan focused solely on improving relations between the two countries.

“We did not come to Qatar to ask them to send any special amount of money. We are only here to discuss improving our relations,” the Turkish foreign minister told reporters.

The pound has fallen about 30 percent in the past month amid aggressive interest rate cuts backed by Erdogan, but economists and opposition politicians say they are risky in part because of galloping inflation.

Asked if Erdogan would seek financial support from Qatar during talks in Doha, Tsavusoglu said Turkey had taken steps to reduce exchange rate volatility. The two countries will sign a range of agreements in areas such as health and education, while boosting military co-operation, he added.

For his part, the Qatari Foreign Minister said that Doha and Ankara are going to sign dozens of agreements during President Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the country.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said Qatar was looking at opportunities arising from the economic challenges facing Turkey.
